Does your job or personal life involve interacting with people who have dementia? Maybe you provide transportation to elderly people who don't drive, volunteer at church or other organizations, are a CNA at a nursing home, or are an emergency worker. There are many situations in which people interact with individuals who have dementia, and it requires some special skills. With CARES® Dementia Basics™, you can learn these skills through our trademarked CARES Approach™. The letters in CARES stand for: Connect with the Person, Assess Behavior, Respond Appropriately, Evaluate What Works, and Share with Others.
CARES Dementia Basics includes a wide variety of activities and video examples of real people with dementia as well as families and professional caregivers.
CARES Dementia Basics was funded in part by a grant from the National Institute on Aging and was developed in conjunction with the national office of the Alzheimer’s Association and a national team of experts. It is consistent with the latest evidence-based research from the Alzheimer’s Association Campaign for Quality Residential Care Practice Recommendations.
And now, you can get individual certification by the Alzheimer’s Association® in essentiALZ™. Just complete the CARES Dementia Basics program, take and pass the essentiALZ certification exam, complete an evaluation, and become certified. EssentiALZ certification allows you to be prepared, demonstrate knowledge, and feel confident in the care of people with dementia. It’s important information you’ll have for interactions with family, church, and community members.
